Fairy Tales Retold | Little Mermaid
The legends were wrong. There is no singing, no warning, no waves, no beautiful woman. There is only a storm that arrives suddenly and the sailors that try to keep the ship going. They don’t have time to notice a new passenger on board: a creature of teeth and claws, a flash of scarlet hair, sharp scales. They get attracted to her, it’s true, but not in a romantic way. Their ugliness is awake; they feel this insatiable curiosity – what is this demon? How could people made such a huge mistake when they retold stories to their children? She doesn’t sing, she doesn’t look beautiful. They get paralyzed, they can’t look at any other place that’s not Ariel, urine runs down their legs. They don’t think about their wives or children, they can’t think about anything else while she satisfies her hunger, sailor by sailor, while the others watch it without moving. She starts with the legs, savors their insides, ends with their tongues. She doesn’t speak the whole time, not even while the ship is sinking, much less when she goes back to the ocean and waits for the next vessel.
